Seventeenth SAARC Summit Preparations under way

The preparations for the 17th SAARC Summit hosted by the Maldives, scheduled to be held in the South Region in the island of Hithadhoo on 10 – 11th November 2011 are going ahead as scheduled.

The preparations include the construction of a Convention Centre in Hithadhoo Island and landscaping the area. Addu City as a whole is gearing up for hosting the Summit, which would mark the biggest such event to be held in the South region.

Part of the Summit preparations include the construction of a VVIP terminal and a VIP jetty by Gan Airport Company Limited.

The State Banquet to be hosted by the President of Maldives for the Heads of States/Government will be held in the island of Hulhumeedhoo.

The main roads of Feydhoo, Maradhoofeydhoo and Maradhoo is expected to be paved by the Summit date, with support of friendly Member State.

Excavation and construction of Feydhoo harbor is proceeding as planned.

A certificate/diploma course in International Relations is currently being conducted for 52 students at the University Campus in preparation for the SAARC Summit. The trainees will act as Liaison and Protocol Officers for the visiting delegations.

Entertainment programs consisting of local cultural dances, a cricket tournament and depiction of Maldivian culture in general are being packaged for the occasion by Maldivian musician and experts.

A domestic airport is presently under construction on Fuahmulaku specifically for transporting cricketers and cricket fans to the match to be held there as part of the Summit’s sideline activities. This newly built airport will also be used for the transportation of Spouses of Heads of State/Government for the Spouses’ program to be held on the 11th in Fuahmulaku.

Heads of State and their entourage will be accommodated at the nearby Shangrila’s Villingili Resort & Spa and Herethere Island.

Efforts are being made to make the Seventeenth SAARC Summit a success and a memorable one.
